Registering a Norwegian .no domain as a foreigner

I am a resident in Denmark and I would like to start a business to support Nordic clients so I want to register a .no domain but seems like it is impossible without having a company/Norwegian personal number.

What are the ways to do this?

Answer

In order to do this you would normally need a Norwegian ID number.

However, there are ways around this:

  • Partner with a Norwegian Business or Individual: If you have a business partner or associate in Norway, they could potentially register the domain on your behalf.
  • Use a Domain Trustee Service: There are services that, for a fee, will act as your local presence and register a .no domain on your behalf. They have a Norwegian organization number, and they basically ‘rent’ this out to you. Do keep in mind though that this will involve trusting another party with your domain name. Find a professional here.
  • Establish a Norwegian Entity: This might be more effort than it’s worth, especially if you’re just starting out, but you could look into what’s involved in setting up a business entity in Norway to obtain your own organization number. Let me know if you need help with this.
